Summer is here, which means sun hats, sticky car seats, melting zooper doopers, and so many sunscreen applications.
If you’re prepping for summer with a baby in tow, here’s the realistic guide to what you actually need (and what you absolutely don’t).
Nappies that hold up in the heat
Hot weather + hydration + surprise car naps = a LOT of nappies. Look for:
High absorbency
Good breathability
Soft materials that don’t irritate sweaty skin
Bonus points if you buy in bulk, because running out during a heatwave is… not ideal.
Wipes, wipes, wipes (did we say wipes?)
You’ll use them for everything:
Sticky fingers
Sunscreen mishaps
Mystery car-seat messes
The ice cream that somehow got behind their ear
Baby wipes are basically summer’s version of a Swiss Army knife.
A decent nappy cream
Summer = sweat. Sweat = irritation.
Irritation = a baby who protests loudly and dramatically (and fair enough).
Keep a soothing barrier cream in your bag, pram, glovebox, beside the cot, next to your snacks… basically everywhere.
A hat they might actually keep on
We wish you luck. Truly.
Pick something soft, wide-brimmed, and ideally with a chin strap so you’re not playing “fetch the hat” every five minutes.
A lightweight pram liner
Hot pram seats are the enemy. A breathable liner stops the sweaty-back situation and makes outings much more comfortable for everyone.
(Also: they’re washable. Which you will need.)
Sun-safe clothing
Long sleeves but lightweight fabric = your new best friend. Babies have no chill when it comes to sunscreen, so giving yourself less skin to cover is basically a public service.
A parent survival kit
No one talks about this, but they should. Include:
Snacks (for you)
Cold water
A spare shirt (also for you)
Emergency nappy stash
A packet of wipes large enough to mop up a small pool
Summer parenting is not for the faint-hearted.
THE WRAP-UP
Summer with a baby is equal parts adorable and sweaty. But with the right essentials, you’ll survive it like the seasoned parent you are.
And yes… everything you actually need?
