At first glance, baby wipes all seem fairly similar. They’re wet. They wipe. Job done.
Until you use a thin one.
And suddenly you’re folding it. Refolding it. Folding it again. Questioning your life choices. Possibly using six wipes to achieve what one good wipe should have handled with quiet competence.
So yes, thickness does matter. Quite a bit, actually.
What “Thick” Really Means (And Why It Helps)
Thicker wipes aren’t just about feeling fancy. They’re about doing the job properly.
A thicker wipe tends to:
· Clean more effectively in fewer passes
· Stay intact without tearing mid-wipe (critical)
· Provide better protection for your hands
· Be gentler on baby skin
Which is especially important during those nappy changes that require focus, bravery, and possibly deep breathing.

Thin Wipes: Not Always Bad, But Often Harder Work
Thin wipes aren’t necessarily terrible. They still clean. But they often require more wipes per change, especially for bigger messes.
This can mean:
· Using more wipes overall
· More friction on baby’s skin
· More time spent mid-change trying to regain control of the situation
· And when you’re changing nappies multiple times a day, small differences add up quickly.
Thicker Wipes Can Be Gentler on Skin
It sounds counterintuitive, but thicker wipes are often gentler. Because they clean more efficiently, you don’t need to wipe the same area repeatedly.
Less wiping = less irritation.
This can make a noticeable difference for babies with sensitive skin or those prone to nappy rash.

Moisture Matters Too
Thickness works best when paired with the right amount of moisture. A wipe should be damp enough to clean easily, but not so wet that it leaves skin soaked.
The goal is clean, comfortable skin — not adding more moisture back into the situation.
When Thickness Matters Most
You’ll especially appreciate thicker wipes during:
· Newborn stages (very frequent changes)
· Overnight changes (low light, high stakes)
· Out-of-home changes (no backup supplies within arm’s reach)
· Any change where efficiency is your friend
Which, realistically, is most of them.
The Bottom Line
All wipes technically do the same job. But thicker wipes tend to do it faster, more comfortably, and with less effort.
Fewer wipes used. Less irritation. Less frustration.
And when you’re doing this several times a day, every day, that quiet efficiency makes a real difference.
