Spring cleaning your nappy stash: what to toss and what to keep - The Nappy Shop

Spring is here, the days are getting longer, and if your nappy cupboard looks anything like ours, it is probably a bit of a jumble right now. Half-used packs from three sizes ago, a stray tube of cream with no lid, wipes that dried out months back. Sound familiar? A proper spring clean is a simple way to make nappy changes easier and make sure you are actually using what you have.

Start with a proper look through

Pull everything out of the cupboard, drawer, or nappy bag and lay it all out. You will probably find a few surprises: old sizes your bub has grown out of, half-empty wipe packets, and maybe a rash cream that has been sitting around longer than you realised. Once everything is in front of you, sorting gets much easier.

Make three piles: keep, use soon, and move on. Keep current-size nappies and unopened products that are still within their use-by dates. Put anything you need to use soon somewhere easy to reach. That way, you are less likely to forget about it at the back of the cupboard.

What to toss or move along

A few things are worth removing from your everyday stash:

    • Nappies more than one size too small. If they are still clean and unused, consider donating them to a local nappy bank rather than sending them to landfill.

    • Any cream, powder, or wipes that are past their expiry date.

    • Wipes packets that have dried out or gone crusty around the seal.

    • Anything that has been sitting open in a hot car or garage for a long time.

    • Products that have changed smell, texture, or appearance.

It is also worth checking your nappy bag. A packet of wipes that has been rolling around in the car for months may not be much use when you actually need it.

    What to keep

Current-size nappies can stay, even if a pack is half full. Unopened wipes and creams that are still within their expiry window are worth keeping. Spare change mats, disposal bags and a backup pack of wipes are also handy because you can never predict when a messy change will happen.

If you have a large supply of one size but your baby is starting to look snug, do not automatically buy another bulk box just because it is convenient. Work out roughly how many nappies you are using each week and whether your little one is likely to move up a size soon.

Spring is also a good time to reassess your routine

Once the shelves are clear, take a minute to think about what is actually working. Are you happy with the fit? Are you getting regular leaks? Are wipes drying out before you finish the packet? Does your baby seem comfortable during warmer days?

If your current nappies are not quite doing the job, spring is a sensible time to try something different. The Babylux range is one option worth considering, particularly if you prefer thinner nappies and products made with sensitive skin in mind. Babylux nappies are ultra-thin and hypoallergenic, with no inks, dyes or parabens, while the bamboo wipes are 100% biodegradable.

You do not have to replace everything at once, either. A small sample pack can be an easy way to see how a nappy fits your baby before committing to a larger box. If it works for you, bulk boxes can make sense once you know the size and fit are right.

A tidy nappy stash is not going to change your life, but it can make those middle-of-the-night changes considerably less annoying. Clear out what you no longer need, bring the useful stuff forward, and keep the next size within easy reach. A little organisation now saves plenty of cupboard rummaging later.
