How to Tell When It's Time to Move Up a Nappy Size - The Nappy Shop

One of the great parenting mysteries is knowing when it's time to size up your baby's nappies.

It's not like babies send you a polite memo saying, "Dear Mum and Dad, I'll be moving into Size 4 from Tuesday. Kind regards."

Instead, they leave clues. Usually in the form of mysterious leaks, exploding nappies or little red marks that suddenly weren't there yesterday.

The good news is that knowing when to move up a size is actually much simpler than most parents think.

    Don't Focus on Age

One of the biggest misconceptions is that nappies should be chosen based on age.

In reality, they're designed around weight and fit.

Two babies born on exactly the same day can comfortably wear different nappy sizes because babies grow at different rates and have completely different body shapes.

The weight guide on the packet is a helpful starting point, but it's exactly that… a guide, not a rule.

    The Biggest Clue? More Leaks

If you've suddenly started dealing with leaks despite using the same nappies you've always loved, don't immediately assume you've bought a bad batch.

Your baby may simply have outgrown them.

When a nappy becomes too small, it has less absorbent material available and can't fit snugly around the legs and waist. That's often when leaks begin appearing, usually at the least convenient time possible.

Which, in parenting, is every time.

    Watch for Red Marks

A few light marks around the legs are perfectly normal.

Deep red marks that take a long time to disappear are another story.

They can be a sign that the elastic is working much harder than it should and it's time to move up a size.

Your baby's nappy should fit securely not leave them looking like they've been wearing skinny jeans.

The Tabs Are Working Harder Than You Are

Take a look at where the tabs fasten.

If they're stretching right to the edge every single time, your baby is probably ready for the next size.

A properly fitting nappy should fasten comfortably across the front without feeling like it's under pressure.

    Bigger Isn't Always Better

It might sound tempting to buy oversized nappies "so they'll last longer," but nappies that are too big can leak just as easily.

Gaps around the legs allow moisture to escape before the absorbent core has a chance to do its job.

The aim isn't the biggest nappy, it's the best-fitting one.

    Trust Your Instincts

You know your baby better than anyone.

If something feels different… more leaks, more discomfort, or you're constantly adjusting the nappy, it might be worth trying the next size.

Buying one packet to test is much cheaper than washing cot sheets every second morning.

    The Takeaway

Sizing up isn't a parenting milestone anyone talks about, but it can make an enormous difference.

A nappy that fits properly is more comfortable, more absorbent and far less likely to leak.

Sometimes the solution to those frustrating leaks isn't changing brands at all - it's simply changing sizes.
